Automatic password generation rules
Posted: 29 Dec 2009 10:01 PM

Hi,
I was wondering if it’s possible to configure a set of rules that the password generation tool abides by, for example passwords must have the following characteristics:
At least 16 characters long
Contain at least one upper case character (A-Z) and one lower case character (a-z)
Have at least one numeric or non-alphanumeric character as well as letters (e.g., 0-9, !@#$%^&*()_+|~-=\`{}[]:";'<>?,./)

Thanks
Greg

Greg,

You can customize the password generation rules for each password in a template. Go to Administration | Secret Templates | Pick a Secret Template | Edit Passwords.

You can specify the length of the passwords and the character set to draw random characters from.

For example:

12
ABCDEF0123456789
Would generate a password of length 12 made up of hexadecimals.

OR

32
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVXYZ0123456789
Would generate a password of length 32 made up of upper, lower and numbers.

We will be improving the choices in Secret Server 7 to allow specific criteria as you describe. This is a very popular request by our government customers.

Thanks for your feedback.

Greg,

In addition, Kevin on our team just reminded me that in 6.1 we improved the password generation to always include at least one character from each set (a-z,A-Z,0-9,symbols) that is defined in the character set.

Best.
