RDP launcher feature
Posted: 30 Dec 2009 1:10 AM

Apologies if this is already a feature and its just im ignorant, but would it be possible to have it so that as part of the RDP launcher you can prompt for which box to use it against. As an example, i have AD Service Accounts that i dont want my guys to name the passwords but on occassion they need to be able to log on to specific boxes in the context of those boxes. So I want to apply the RDP launcher to an AD User Account as opposed to a Windows Server Account.
Because these service accounts may be used on multiple boxes within the domain its not practical to bind the account to one server object (or create multiples of). Can this be done, is there a work around ?

On another note... Launchers. It would be good if it was possible to expose custom launchers. Anyone with a little bit of development expertise should be able to create a custom launcher that Secret Server passes a set of variables to. As an example, same situation as above. I have engineers that need to login to specific hardware appliances but they use an internet browser to do so. I dont want to divulge the accounts/passwords to them so having a feature similar to RDP & Putty but for internet browser would be great. When the engineer clicks on the Launcher it loads up IE / Firefox and automatically logs them in.
I know you have the Secret Assistant, but im under the impression the engineer needs to have the ability to view the password in order for this to work? Perhaps using Secret Assistant to perform the above task might be a better route ? That said, being able to have custom launchers would still be a good idea as well.....

thanks for taking the time to listen to our requests....

Mike,

I will follow up with the development team to see what can done. We have had the request for RDP to different machines using the same account before and should be able to solve that problem.

We have been hesitant to allow custom launchers due to security concerns (running a command on the user's PC) but will revisit to see what can be done. We are currently investigating single click launches for websites and bookmarklets which should come to Secret Server soon.

Yes - using Secret Assistant does require the engineer to have View permission on the Secret.

Thanks for the great feedback!
