In my Active Directory Configuration section, I see this in the log:

Found 5 active directory users for domain X in group Y

and then:
Synchronizing "X". Synchronized 0 user(s). Removed membership for 0 user(s). Disabled 0 users. 0 users were created as disabled. Re-enabled 0 user(s).

I can assign permissions to group Y for a particular folder but users in that group cannot see it. So I end up having to assign permissions manually for everyone in that group.
